Colorado Gold Mining News:

Gold discoveries in Colorado began around Denver, traced the placer gold to its source in the mountains west of Denver, then followed the Colorado Mineral Belt in a southwest direction across the state to its terminus in the San Juan Mountains. The Cripple Creek district, far from the mineral belt, was one of the last gold districts to be discovered. Three Colorado mines continue to produce gold. The Cripple Creek & Victor mine at Victor, an open-pit heap leach operation owned by AngloGold Ashanti, is the leading producer, with 8.8 metric tons (283,000 troy ounces) of gold in 2006. Other active gold mines in the state are underground Golden Wonder mine near Lake City, and the Cash and Rex mines in the Gold Hill mining district in Boulder County, Colorado.Via Wikipedia - Geology

Trivia:

GO is a strategic board game for two players. It is also known as igo (Japanese), weiqi or wei ch'i (Chinese) or baduk (Korean). Go is noted for being rich in strategic complexity despite its simple rules.

The game is played by two players who alternately place black and white stones on the vacant intersections of a grid of 19×19 lines. The object of the game is to control a larger portion of the board than the opponent. A stone or a group of stones is captured and removed if it has no empty adjacent intersections, the result of being completely surrounded by stones of the opposing color.

Placing stones close together helps them support each other and avoid capture. On the other hand, placing stones far apart creates influence across more of the board. Part of the strategic difficulty of the game stems from finding a balance between such conflicting interests. Players strive to serve both defensive and offensive purposes and choose between tactical urgency and strategic plans.

Go originated in ancient China more than 2,500 years ago, and although it is not known exactly when the game was invented, by the 3rd century BC it was a popular pastime, as indicated by a reference to the game in the Analects of Confucius.

DIG is a board game that was released by Parker Parker Brothers in 1940 before the U.S. entered World War II. Players compete to be the first one to complete words called for on the calling cards. To do this, players must 'mine' letters out of the letter pile using the 'mining picks'. They then receive a share of the gold mine. Five shares can be swapped for a gold bar, and the first player to collect three gold bars wins the game. The game featured the familiar icon "Rich Uncle Pennybags" after being first used in the game Monopoly. The game was created by down-and-out inventors Charles Todd and Charles Darrow during the Depression-era '30s, and the game was initially rejected by Parker Bros. Darrow sold locally printed facsimiles of the boardgame on the street, making Rich Uncle Pennybags an illustrated icon for the people.

Note: In 1941 the British Secret Service had John Waddington Ltd., the licensed manufacturer of (the more popular game) Monopoly outside the U.S., create a special edition for World War II prisoners of war held by the Nazis. Hidden inside these games were maps, compasses, real money, and other objects useful for escaping. They were distributed to prisoners by the International Red Cross.

To date, according to Hasbro, since Charles Darrow patented Monopoly in 1935, approximately 750 million people have played the game, making it "the most played (commercial) board game in the world.

DIG vs Monopoly: The game DIG requires players to engage in a rapid "free tagging" thought processes to accumulate wealth and win the game. This environment provides a positive competitive gaming experience that fosters a better understanding of short word taxonomy -- in addition to the excitement of potentially winning the game. - Joe
